Animal laws in India, explained in simple language. No legal jargon.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960

The most important animal law in India. It aims to prevent unnecessary pain or suffering on animals and defines "animal" as any living creature other than a human being. Awbi It covers beating, abandoning, neglecting, overloading, and killing animals. First-time offenders face fines; repeat offenders can face imprisonment. The law applies to every animal — pets, street animals, farm animals, and wildlife.

Wildlife Protection Act, 1972

Protects wild animals and birds from hunting, poaching and illegal trade. Keeping wild animals as pets is illegal under this law. If you see someone selling or keeping a wild animal, you can report it.

Indian Penal Code — Sections 428 & 429

Sections 428 and 429 of the IPC provide punishment for all acts of cruelty such as killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless of animals. Awbi Unlike the PCA Act, IPC penalties are much stricter and can include significant imprisonment. If someone poisons or kills your pet, this is the law to use.

Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023

Stray dogs cannot be relocated — it is not permissible as it causes more problems. Animal welfare organizations can be asked to sterilize and vaccinate dogs instead. Awbi Residents and housing societies cannot relocate or harm street dogs.

Dog Breeding & Marketing Rules, 2016

All dog breeders must obtain a licence from the local authority, and all breeding establishments must be open to inspection by AWBI-authorized inspectors. Awbi Buying from an unlicensed breeder is illegal.

Transport of Animals Rules, 1978

Animals must be transported humanely — with proper space, shelter from heat and rain, food and water. Overloading or cruel transport is a punishable offence. If you see animals being transported cruelly, you can file a police complaint .

Performing Animals Rules, 2001

Section 22 of the PCA Act prohibits exhibiting or training an animal without registration with the AWBI. Awbi Circuses and film productions must be registered. Using unregistered animals in shows or films is illegal.
